Pvt. Kasey L. Franklin has completed basic combat training at Fort Sill, Okla., where she was recognized as an honor graduate.
Franklin, daughter of Michael and Hayley W. Franklin of Richfield, is now at Fort Sam Houston in Texas for AIT training for 16 weeks.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition, core values and physical fitness.
She also received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.

Norwood VFW Post 6183 will host a Memorial Day ceremony from 10-11 a.m. May 28 at the Post headquarters.

Parker graduates from basic training
PFC Marcus Cody Parker has successfully completed his basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. After graduating on March 29 in the top 20 percent of the 2nd-13th Infantry Battalion, he was promoted to PFC-E3.

Captain Timothy Page, U.S. Army Recruiting Company Commander, Charlotte, and Sergeant First Class Scott Dickinson, U.S. Army Recruiting Station Commander, Kannapolis, paid a personal visit to Pfeiffer University’s Misenheimer campus to tour North Carolina’s first AMVETS Veterans Career Center.

Airman graduates basic training
Airman Jacob Thomas Robinson, son of Tom and Karen Robinson of Richfield, graduated from the United States Air Force Military Basic Training program on Jan. 26 at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

Kendall receives military medals
The Congress of the United States House of Representatives honored CPL Willie J. Kendall, who was born in Stanly County in 1927, for service provided in the Korean War at 1 p.m. Feb. 19 at West Vandalia Presbyterian Church, Greensboro.

Students receive nominations to U.S. Service Academies
U.S. Rep. Larry Kissell (NC-08) has announced that he has nominated four local students to U.S. Service Academies. In order to receive an appointment to a military academy, students must first receive a nomination.
