Former Marine awaiting double transplant

Fundraiser to assist with expenses

Friday, September 7, 2012 — Charlotte, N.C., Sept. 6, 2012 – David Edwards, of Charlotte,

needs a lifesaving kidney and liver transplant, but the expenses are

standing in the way between him and the transplant waiting list.

Before he can be added to the list, he must begin fundraising to prove

he can afford his post-transplant care and medications.

For 63-year-old Edwards, a former U.S. Marine and Vietnam combat

veteran, his strong faith in God is everything, as it sees him through

even the most difficult days. He and his wife, Rose, have three

children and three grandchildren, who mean the world to them both.

The average liver and kidney transplant costs nearly $1 million. And

that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, he faces

significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life,

he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications,

which are as critical to his survival as the transplant. Because of

his declining health, David can no longer work in sales, adding to his

financial strain.

To help alleviate the financial burden, Edwards turned to the National

Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance with some of these

financial burdens. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps patients

raise funds to pay for transplant-related expenses.

“It breaks my heart to see someone face such a terrible illness like

this,” said Claire Prince, NFT fundraising consultant. “At NFT, we

want to help David, Rose and their family raise the necessary funds so

they can focus on his health instead of the soaring medical expenses.”

Volunteers are holding a poker tournament Saturday, Sept. 22 from

12:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Fanz Sports Grill, 3425 David Cox Rd. in

Charlotte.*Tournament buy-in is $55, and there will be cash and other

prizes for winners. Players can sign up at the restaurant between

11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. the day of the event.
