It is the mission of any credible journalist or newspaper to report the facts, and the facts only. We must be, in the words of Washington Post Reporter and Editor Bob Woodward, “the best obtainable version of the truth.”
It is not only our goal to present the facts as they happen, but to also be accurate, fair and unbiased. That means we must not only be certain that what we print is the truth, it must report the details as they occurred while representing all sides of an issue, and it must not include our personal opinions. That is what columns and the editorial page are for. It is our job to present the details as they happened and let the readers form their own opinions.
As we at The Stanly News and Press move forward in our coverage of the relicensing of the dams along the Yadkin River, we will not deviate from this mission. While it is easy to discern that this issue has a deep impact on this county and the state as a whole, it is important for us, as your Stanly County news source, to present to you the facts and nothing more.
Though many may already have formed opinions of the issue, favoring one side over the other, it is not the job of our reporters or the newspaper as a whole, to direct those opinions in any way.

Building forts
When I was a child, I considered building forts to be one of the most thrilling aspects of creative play.
The earliest “forts” I remember were rings of stuffed animals, dolls and pillows that surrounded me when I went to sleep at night. Mom and Dad would build these forts with me and my siblings at night to keep us from being scared of monsters under the bed or in the closet. They offered a sense of security and became a fun bedtime ritual. -
