Sunday, January 20, 2013 — Walter Leo Austin Jr., 82, of New London, N.C., passed away suddenly Wednesday, January 16, 2013.
Born July 10, 1929, in Stanly County, N.C., he was the son of Walter Lee Austin and Nellie Mae Lowder Austin. He was educated at New London School.
Mr. Austin served in the Army shortly after high school during the Korean Conflict as a Military Policeman escorting many high ranking officials while there.
Leo was married to Mary Sullivan on June 25, 1955, at Walter Reed Chapel in Washington, DC. They were married for 50 years before she preceded him in death on November 22, 2005. He was also preceded in death by two brothers; J.B. Austin and Richard Daniel “Dan” Austin.
He is survived by one brother, Harold R. “Bud” Austin and wife Enid; two sisters, Callie A. “Beanie” Austin and Ruby A. Napier and husband James, all of New London. He also is survived by many nephews, nieces, cousins and a host of firends.
Mr. Austin was a well respected, superior welder and blacksmith, a skill he learned from his father in the family business. Many local wrought iron works are attributed to Leo and his brothers and father including the railings on the Masonic temple, Second Street Presbyterian stair railings and Stanly County Jail cell bars to name a few.
Leo’s other interests were fishing, hunting and taking good care of his cats. He and his wife had traveled in many locations in the United States and Europe.
A graveside service was Saturday, January 19 at 2 p.m. with military rites provided by the Stanly County DAV at Kendall’s Baptist Church Cemetery on Old Salisbury Road and visitation with the family followed after the service in the church fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
