ALBEMARLE - Alva Lindsay Rickman Shumate of Albemarle, North Carolina passed peacefully on February 14, 2013 at Stanly Manor.
Born May 16, 1925, in Gaston County, NC, Mrs. Shumate was a daughter of the late William A. Lindsay and Elta White Lindsay. She is survived by her sister, Jann Savage, of Bessemer City, N.C. and was preceded in death by her sister, Eleanor Ware, of Kings Mountain, NC and her brother, William Lindsay, Jr. of Bessemer City, N.C.
Mrs. Shumate was also preceded in death by husband, Raymond Rickman and by husband, James Shumate. Her eldest son, Dennis White Rickman, of Durham, N.C., passed on February 21, 2010.
She is survived by her youngest son, Bryan Shumate, daughter in law, Tammi Shumate, and granddaughter, Bailey Shumate, all of Albemarle, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Cathy Rickman, and granddaughter, Abbie, of Durham, N.C. She is also survived by nieces and nephews throughout North Carolina.
For over 20 years, Mrs. Shumate was an Area Director for the American Cancer Society, making friends and building relationships with patients in need, as well as with volunteers. Many of those connections remained throughout her life. Her dedication and hard work was appreciated by many and was an example for others in the organization.
Visitation will be Monday, Feb. 18, 2013 at Sisk-Butler Funereal Home in Bessemer City, N.C. at 2 p.m, followed by a service at 3 p.m., in the chapel. Burial will follow at Bessemer City Memorial Gardens.
