Thursday, October 25, 2012 — Gary Vance “Paw Paw” Poplin, age 68, of Norwood, N.C., died at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 23, 2012, in Albemarle.
The family will receive friends at Stanly Funeral Home on Saturday, October 27, 2012, from 6-8 p.m.
His funeral will be Sunday, October 28, 2012, at 4 p.m. in Porter Baptist Church. Dr. Kinney Wallace and Rev. Jesse Dennis will officiate. A Masonic burial service will follow in Porter Baptist Church Cemetery, Norwood.
Born June 25, 1944, in Stanly County, N.C., he was the son of the late Vance Edison Poplin and Mary Ethel Burleson Poplin.
He was a graduate of Gaston Technical College and worked as an Inspector for the Department of Transportation until he retired. He worked with Parsons Transportation until 2005 when he retired a second time.
Mr. Poplin is a member of Porter Baptist Church, where he proudly served many years as Sunday School Director. Mr. Poplin served as a missionary in West Virginia and Brazil as well as volunteered at many retirement homes and organizations by playing music and visiting. He helped continue the annual Thanksgiving Breakfast, which is a Porter Church tradition.
Mr. Poplin is a Mason and member of Lodge 703 A.F. & A.M.; he served as Master of Lodge 348 and is a member of The York Right.
He is “Paw Paw” to Joshawa and Mary Elizabeth, and loved talking on his C.B. radio, laughing, fishing, farming and gardening.
He was married to Wilmetta Snuggs, who preceded him in death January 19, 2012, and father to son, Wesley Laurence Poplin, who also preceded him in death.
Survivors include his daughter, Joy Huneycutt and husband Jesse of Albemarle; brother, Eddie Poplin and wife Charlotte; nieces, Tiffany Laney and husband Terry and son Nathan of Charlotte; Amy Cunning and husband Chris of Maryland; and Miranda Poplin and husband Jeff and son Cooper Scott of South Carolina.
