Jonas Colson

Wednesday, January 23, 2013 — Claremont – America has lost another member of its Greatest Generation.  

Jonas Jackson Colson, age 97, of Claremont, passed away Sunday, January 20, 2013, at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton.  

He served in the U.S. Army 29th Infantry Division from March 1944-January 1946 during the European Campaign. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal and European Theater Operation Medal.  

Born April 27, 1915, in Norwood, N.C., he was the son of the late James H. and Virginia Howell Colson.  

He had been a member of Bethlehem United Meth-odist Church in Claremont since 1938. He retired in 1981 from Broyhill Furniture Industries (Con-over Plant) after 31 years of service.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Virginia Carpenter Colson in October 2005; two brothers, Glenn and James Colson; and four sisters, Virginia Colson Little, Leola Colson Thompson, Goldie Colson Thompson and Mary Frances (Tootie) Colson.

He is survived by two sons, Don Colson and wife Sandra and Nick Colson and wife Jan, all of Claremont; daughter, Pat Colson Reid of Albemarle; brother; John H. Colson and wife Mary Louise of Norwood, N.C.; grandson, Derek Colson and wife Michelle; three granddaughters; Melia Kenwor-thy, Stacey Pollard and husband Nick and Tiffany Coleman and husband Bill; two great-grandsons; Cole Kenworthy and Austin Coleman; five great-granddaughters, Christa Hendrix and husband Nate, Candace Styers and husband Mal-colm, Kirsten Day, Alaina Coleman and Kaitlyn Day; two great-great-grandchildren, Harper and Hayden Hendrix; and special friend, Abby Miller.

The funeral service will be on Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Claremont with Dr. Perry Miller officiating.

Burial will follow in St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Burke Mortuary in Newton.
