Henry Doby

Tuesday, July 20, 2010 — Mr. Henry Calvin Doby, Jr., 89, of Albemarle, N.C., passed away Saturday, July 17, 2010 at the N.C. State Veterans Home in Salisbury, N.C.

Mr. Doby was born August 19, 1920 in Albemarle, N.C. He attended the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and in 1942, entered into active service with the U.S. Army during World War II. He served as a Radio Operator and was involved in the battles and campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhine-land, and Central Europe to name a few. He was awarded the Meritorious Unit Award Medal, the Victory Medal, the American Theater Campaign Medal, the EAMET Campaign Medal with six Bronze Service Stars, the Distinguished Unit Badge with two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters and the Good Conduct Medal.

After the War, he returned to the United States and graduated from Wake Forest School of Law. On May 15th, 1950, he opened his law office. Mr. Doby practiced law for more than 50 years, during which time he served as City Attorney for the City of Albemarle for 47 years. In 1958 he partnered with Frank N. Patterson to form the law firm of Patterson and Doby. After Senator Patterson's untimely death in 1971, Mr. Doby and David A. Beaver established the firm of Doby and Beaver in 1977.  Mr. Doby retired in January, 2010.

Mr. Doby had a great love for his church, his community and for local and national politics. He was an active, life-time member of First Street United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees and other committees. He served on the Stanly Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees for many years and was a Mason and Shriner. He was appointed to the N.C. Board of Realtors by both Governor Terry Sanford and Governor Bob Scott. He was past Chairman of the Democratic Party in Stanly County and served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention when Lyndon B Johnson was selected to run for the Presidency.

Mr. Doby was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Elithe Myrel Outlaw Doby, his parents, Alberta Blanche Russell Doby and Henry Calvin Doby, Sr., and his stepmother, Bertha Lowder Doby.

Mr. Doby is survived by his daughters, Alberta D. Phibbs and husband, Roy of Raleigh, Susan D. Skolsky and husband, Steve of Chapel Hill; grandchildren Andrew H. Phibbs and wife, Elizabeth M. Phibbs of Charlotte, Laura Elithe Phibbs of Greenville, Sara Catherine Skolsky and Steven Daniel Skolsky of Chapel Hill; great-grandchildren, Anna Elizabeth Phibbs, Emma Catherine Phibbs and Andrew Henry Phibbs, II; sisters, Laura D. Frazier and husband, Ken of Albemarle, Margaret D. Cooper of Albemarle, Sara D. Brockmann and husband, Marvin of Atlanta, Ga., and brother, Sidney L. Doby and wife, Joyce of Concord. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at First Street United Methodist Church in Albemarle. The Reverend Leslee Wray and the Reverend Virginia Herron will officiate. Burial will follow at Salem United Methodist Church. Friends may pay their respects after the service.
