Barbara Ann Mabe Underwood Bowers, 71, of New London, passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Stanly Regional Medical Center.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at at New London United Methodist Church, 206 S. Main St., New London. The Rev. Eileen Ayuso will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
Born November 12, 1941 in Stanly County, she is the daughter of the late Dewey Dwight “Buck” Mabe and the late Clara Troutman Mabe Lowder.
She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Jay Harold Bowers of the home; daughters Deborah Underwood Hopper and husband James, Jr. of Wilmington, and Kimberly Underwood Hunt and husband, Anthony of Little River, S.C.; one son, James Underwood Jr. and wife Julie of Clayton; stepson Michael Bowers and wife Jana of Concord, Ill.; one deceased stepdaughter, Lashunda Bowers; grandchildren, Katherine Hopper Genes and husband Elliott, Emily and Kelsey Hopper, all of Raleigh, and Kendall Underwood of Clayton; one deceased stepgrandson, Erik Hunt; stepgrandsons, Brandon and Kaiden Bowers of Concord, Ill.; brothers Sonny Mabe and wife Janet of Lexington, S.C. and Kenny Mabe and wife Mary of Eden; special aunts and uncles, including James Mabe and wife Judy of Whispering Pines; several nieces, nephews and cousins; former husband, James Underwood Sr. and wife Margo of Raleigh; and former sister-in-law, Judy Holcomb and husband Dave, and former mother-in-law, Lena Underwood, all of Albemarle.
