Mr. George Patterson “Patt” Ritchie Jr., 84, of Concord, passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at his home.
A memorial service was held at Central United Methodist Church, Concord, on Saturday, January 26, 2013. A private burial was held for the family.
Mr. Ritchie was born September 7, 1928, in Concord, N.C. to the late George Patterson and Agnes Efird Ritchie.
Following high school, Patt left Concord to attend VMI and then the U.S. Naval Academy. After his graduation, he served his country as a Lt. Commander during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Ritchie joined Douglas Aircraft as an engineer in Charlotte and then took a position with The Boeing Company as an Aero Space Engineer in Alabama and Washington State.
Upon moving back to the Concord area in 1976, he and his younger brother, Charles Morton Ritchie, purchased their father’s six NAPA stores, known as Ritchie’s Auto Parts.
Mr. Ritchie was a lifetime member of the Salvation Army and served on the Board of Directors for many years. He spent tireless hours, even in declining health, reaching out to help others. He preferred all of his charity work to be anonymous.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Ritchie was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Nancy Whitener Ritchie, who passed away January 5, 1998.
Patt Ritchie Jr. is survived by his daughters, Nancy “Nan” Efird Ritchie and Lillian Ritchie Shirley; son, George “Pat” Patterson Ritchie III; grandchildren, Amanda Shirley Chavis and her husband Jerimy, Hoke Shirley, Laura “Caitlin” Ritchie, Mary-Wren Ritchie and Diana Godley Ritchie; great-granddaughter, Anabelle Leigh Chavis; brother, Charles Ritchie and his wife Mary Ann; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended relatives.
