Thursday, January 3, 2013 — Mary Evelyn Burris Speight, 86, of Oakboro, passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2013, at Bethany Woods Nursing Home.
The family will receive friends at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Oakboro, on Saturday, January 5, 2013, from 12:30-2 p.m.
The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Yates Brooks, Rev. Phillip Hunter and Rev. Wayne Bennett, will follow at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Evelyn was born on March 21, 1926, to the late Ira Alexander Burris and the late Theresa Hatley Burris. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by sisters, Edna Briggs and Janet Hudson.
Mrs. Speight is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Ruel William Speight; two daughters, Susan Furr and husband Tommy of Red Cross and Kathy Blackwelder and husband Kenny of Stanfield; son, David Speight and wife Chris of Oakboro; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth Burris and Jim Burris; and three sisters, Betty Napier, Pat Shaver and Carrie McRae.
She was a singer with Singing Americans of Stanly County and with her church choir at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Evelyn was a long time employee of Belk. She was a Sunday school teacher for over 50 years.
Mrs. Speight loved to read and garden. She also enjoyed spending time with her loving family.
