Charles Hubert Harris, 77, of Norwood, passed away on Thursday October 25, 2012, after a brief period of declining health.
The family received friends at Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle from 5-8 p.m. Saturday.
The funeral was at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church of Norwood with Rev. Julie Hill, Rev. Dale Bost and Rev. Elizabeth Ayscue officiating. Burial will follow at Norwood Cemetery in Norwood. There will be a 30-minute state prior to the service.
At other times, the family will meet at his daughter’s home, Martha Sue Hall, 332 Park Road, Albemarle.
Mr. Harris was born on May 19, 1935, in Stanly County, to the late Malvern Palmer Harris, Sr. and Martha Isabell Morgan Harris. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Malvern Palmer Harris, Jr. and sister Michelle Harris Holt.
Mr. Harris is survived by his daughter, Martha Sue Hall and husband Dan Samples, of Albemarle; sons, Charles David Harris and wife Beth and Tracy Lee Harris, all of Norwood; grandchildren, Morgan Hall Schultz and husband Peter, Murphy Williams Hall, David Edward Harris, James Andrew Harris; and two sisters, Margaret Harris Tyson of Norwood and Jane Boles of Pinnacle.
Charles Harris was a jack of all trades. In his early years, Mr. Harris attended Pfeiffer College as well as worked in construction, traveling throughout the eastern United States installing church furnishings. He also volunteered at the Norwood Fire and Rescue for over 25 years.
He retired in 1989 from the Norwood Police Department as the Assistant Chief of Police. After retirement, Mr. Harris continued working on projects like the restoration of a 1952 Ford Van, which was Stanly County’s first rescue vehicle. He was a member of South Stanly Camp of the Gideon’s International.
Mr. Harris may be best known for his passion for performing. He was not just an entertainer but also a singer and songwriter. In 1989, he opened the inviting doors of Chollywood, a music hall in Norwood, where people of all ages enjoyed gospel, bluegrass and country music in a family-friendly and welcoming environment.
He was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Polkton. Mr. Harris lived and loved life to its fullest while graciously serving others. He will always be remembered for his charismatic and happy personality.
