Katherine H. Matthews, 93, a 55-year resident of Edgewater, Md., died Sunday Dec. 2, 2012 peacefully at her home after battling Alzheimer’s disease.
Born in Albemarle to William W. and Addie Iola Morris Hatley on July 14, 1919, she was the wife of the late William H. Matthews who died in 1989.
Mrs. Matthews graduated from Albemarle High School in 1937. During WWII she worked at Bell Aircraft in Marietta, Ga. and at Kanoy Machine Shop in Charlotte as a lathe operator specializing in parts for the B-52 bomber.
She retired in 1983 from the Edgewater Post Office after 15 years delivering mail in Edgewater area. She was a 28-year survivor of breast cancer. Her hobbies included hand quilting, gardening, collecting plates, Santa Clauses and Easter Eggs. She was a long time member of Mayo United Methodist Church where she served on numerous committees and was the coordinator of the Mayo United Methodist Quilt Club (MUM Quilters).
In addition to her late husband she was also predeceased by her siblings, Blanch Ridenhour, John E. and Robert Hatley.
She is the mother of Barbara and her husband Erich Schnoor, Phillip and his wife Gail Matthews and Ben Matthews, grandmother of Sonya M. Golden, Jessica and Elizabeth Matthews, great-grandmother of Joey, London, Jasmine and Jackson, and aunt of Lillian and T.J. Overbay.
A celebration of Katherine’s life will be held from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD, and on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 10 a.m. until her funeral service begins at 11 a.m. at Mayo United Methodist Church, 1005 Old Turkey Point Road, Edgewater, MD.
Interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery, Annapolis, MD.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Mayo United Methodist Church at the above address or to the AAMC Breast Cancer Center, 2002 Medical Parkway, Suite 240, Annapolis, MD, in honor of her daughter Barbara and all who have battled this disease.
