Daisy Lockliear Cotton, Albemarle, 95, passed away on March 10, 2013.
Daisy was born in Monks Corner, S.C. on July 12, 1917, the daughter of Hattie Martin and Andrew V. Lockliear.
She attended and graduated from Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, N.C. She taught fourth grade in the local school system for several years. During World War II, Daisy moved home to South Carolina where she worked on an agricultural experimentation farm. While there, she met and married William D. Cotton, who was serving in the Navy near Charleston.
After the war, the Cottons moved to Mars Hill College, N.C. where her husband taught for several years. While there, sons, William Jr. and Andrew were born. They then moved to Chapel Hill, N.C. while William was in graduate school at UNC. Daisy earned a master’s degree in English while there.
After graduation, the Cottons moved to Pfeiffer College. Daisy taught English and literature and Dr. William Cotton was chairman of the history department.
After retirement, Daisy continued being an active member of the Alpha Delta Kappa teacher’s sorority. She was also an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Albe-marle, where she served as an elder, choir member and Sunday school teacher.
Daisy was an avid gardener, enjoying both flowers and vegetables, which she enjoyed sharing with friends and family. The Cottons were eager travelers, having traveled extensively in Europe, Australia, Israel, Russia and most of North America. She went on a mission trip to Zambia, Africa, at the age of 89.
Daisy enthusiastically supported the Senior Center for many years. She worked with Tax AIDE preparing taxes for seniors for years before teaching others how to do tax preparation.
She and husband Bill enjoyed dancing and wood carving through the Senior Center. Her sons describe Daisy as the “family jock,” winning uncountable medals at the local, state and national Senior Games. She participated in three national events. She was second in the nation in a race walk event in Louisville, Ky. at age 89. She participated at the age of 92 in the Senior Games in the Bay area of California.
Daisy was preceded in death by her husband, Bill in 1998.
She is survived by her two sons, Bill and his wife Connie and Andy and his wife Ruth and four grandchildren, Christopher, James, Jennifer and Benjamin.
We will celebrate her life in a memorial service on April 13 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 126 W. North St., Albemarle. The family will receive friends after the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Pfeiffer University, Misenheimer, NC 28109 or First Presbyterian Church, Albemarle, are suggested.
