US Airways, SCC, other colleges receive honors
Sunday, February 7, 2010 — Stanly Community College, other local colleges and businesses will soon receive regional awards.
“Our regional community and technical colleges give us a competitive advantage as we meet and talk with advisors and corporations that are making decisions about where to expand, consolidate or relocate their companies,” said Ronnie Bryant, president and CEO of the Charlotte Regional Partnership.
“When we explain how the colleges not only offer workplace-related courses but will customize programs for individual companies within our 16 counties, these decision makers are very, very interested.”
There are 10 community and technical colleges in the 16-counties that define the Charlotte USA footprint.
The Charlotte Regional Partnership chose to honor all these entities with its annual award for significant, ongoing contributions to economic development within the Charlotte region.
On May 25, the Partnership will honor all 10 with its public-sector Jerry Award. The other nine are Catawba Valley Community College, Central Piedmont Community Col-lege, Cleveland Community College, Gaston College, Mitchell Community College, Northeastern Technical College, Rowan-Cabarrus Com-munity College, South Piedmont Community College and York Technical College.
US Airways is being recognized with the private-sector award.
The airline is the centerpiece of the transportation infrastructure that connects the region — and regional businesses — to customers, suppliers, visitors and friends throughout the world.
In the past year, the airline has added service to Honolulu, Paris, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo. Daily, year-round nonstop service between Rome and Charlotte begins May 13.
“Even in the midst of the recession, US Airways has had such faith in our region’s business climate that it has expanded service at its Charlotte hub,” said H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler, Charlotte Regional Partner-ship chair.
“US Airways has contributed immeasurably to our ability to attract and retain businesses in our region.”
The 2010 Jerry Awards recipients will be honored during the Partnership’s Annual Awards Luncheon, May 25 at the Charlotte Convention Center at 11:30 a.m.
