The rush of a roller coaster. The joy of the carnival midway. Excitement can accompany just about anything you enjoy doing, but for cancer survivors it’s life that’s a thrill. That’s why Stanly Regional Medical Center will host its first-ever Cancer Survivorship Celebration from 4-6:30 p.m. Monday in the hospital’s Family & Education Center.
Plans call for a wonderful event filled with hope, inspiration and information as the hospital honors people whose lives have been touched by cancer. The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation defines a “survivor” as anyone living with a history of cancer — from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life.
While National Cancer Survivors Day’s official observation falls on the first Sunday in June each year, some hospitals choose to honor survivors at other times. No matter when it’s celebrated, survivors unite in a symbolic event to show the community that life after a cancer diagnosis can be meaningful and productive.
SRMC’s carnival themed celebration, “Life’s a Thrill,” will offer informational booths, midway games and classic fair refreshments. In addition, Lilly Pharmaceuticals has sponsored a national traveling art exhibit to be on display with all works created by cancer survivors.
“We want to celebrate survivorship and life,” says Dr. Dennis Devereux of Albemarle Surgical Asso-ciates.
“The number of people surviving a cancer diagnosis is growing and we want to continue reaching out to them as the local medical center with services and support.”
Members of Stanly Regional’s oncology staff will be on hand, including members of its radiation oncology department and NorthEast Oncology Asso-ciates at Albemarle.
“Patients are often nervous when they come to see us in the office,” says Dr. Heather Pacholke, a board-certified radiation oncologist at the Roy M. Hinson Cancer Center.
“We think they will really enjoy the chance to see their medical team in a relaxed atmosphere with the sole purpose of celebrating their daily victories.”
Pacholke also stresses that the event is for all area survivors, not just those treated at Stanly Regional.
