The Uwharrie Players’ upcoming production of “12 Angry Men”, which opens Friday, November 2 at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center, will provide a very unique viewing experience for audience members. The audience will be sitting on the stage with the actors.
Director Rod Almond and set builder Bob Baker have worked together to design a setting and a seating arrangement that will allow audience members to be “up close and personal” with the action on the stage.
Although a similar type of arrangement has been used for a few Uwharrie Players’ productions performed at smaller venues like Dennis Vineyards, “12 Angry Men” will mark the first time the Players have ever attempted such a setting at the Agri-Civic Center.
Almond had this to say about his decision to put the audience so close to the actors: “ ‘12 Angry Men’ is an intense drama that takes place entirely in a jury room.
The story was originally written for live television back in the 1950s. Television allows the audience to see and hear conversations that can be lost when moved to the theatrical stage.
Also, plays such as this one can get lost in the immense expanse of the Agri-Civic Center auditorium.
“So we decided to put the audience right in the jury room with our cast! By moving the audience literally onto the stage, our patrons will be able to see and hear all the action in a most intimate way.

“12 Angry Men” tells the story of a jury that must decide the fate of a young man who has been accused of killing his own father. It closely examines the American judicial system, and offers a riveting glimpse at how men in this situation must deal with various personalities and must sometimes examine their own prejudices.
The Uwharrie Players’ production of “12 Angry Men” will run November 2, 3, 4 and again November 9, 10, 11 at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center. The Friday and Saturday evening performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinees will start at 2:30 p.m. Because of the limited seating in this unique stage arrangement, patrons are encouraged to arrive early to ensure the best seating possible.
Tickets for “12 Angry Men” are $15.00 for adults (ages 22-59) and $12.00 for seniors (ages 60+) and students (ages 21 and under). Advanced tickets are available at Starnes Jewelers in Albemarle and at the B & D Bookstore in Burleson Square. Tickets will also be available at the Agri-Civic Center box office beginning one hour prior to each performance.
