Guild kicks off new year of guest artists

Tuesday, January 5, 2010 — The Stanly Arts Guild will again be offering a variety of programs each month throughout the coming year. These programs are at the Falling Rivers Gallery, 119 W. Main St. (next door to Starnes Jewelers) at 6:45 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month.

To begin the new year the Stanly Arts Guild will present Leigh B. Williams on Jan. 7.

Williams began her initial training as an oil painter. However, she discovered the versatility of acrylics and for the past 15 years has been working exclusively in that medium. She uses textural mediums and collage techniques to create both abstract and representational images on canvas.

“I particularly enjoy experimenting with the juxtaposition of organic forms with geometric shapes,” she said. “My latest series incorporates the shapes and textures of the architectural forms that I photographed while in Italy, France and the Czech Republic.”

Williams, who has a bachelor of fine arts degree from the College of William and Mary, has exhibited and sells her work primarily in the Southeast.

She has been a member of the Cabarrus Art Guild for more than ten years and has been an art instructor for more than 20 years. She has taught all grade levels, from first grade through Advanced Placement high school art, in both private and public schools. She is currently teaching at a private school in Cabarrus County.

She was named the Walmart Teacher of the Year in 1997. Her students have won both regional and national awards through the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Program and she was selected as an outstanding educator through the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Program in 2007.

She also enjoys conducting workshops for both educators and adult artists.

Williams and her husband are residents of Charlotte and have three grown children.

Stanly Arts Guild meetings are the first Thursday of every month at 6:45 p.m. at the Falling Rivers Gallery. The Guild is sponsored in part by the Stanly County Arts Council and The Grassroots Program of the NC Arts Council, a state agency.
