Fair opens tonight

Thursday, September 2, 2010 — Rides, games, music and more hit the Stanly County Fairgrounds tonight in the form of the 76th annual Stanly County Fair, sponsored by  American Legion Post 76. This year, the rides will be put on by J&J Amusements.

“We’re looking forward to a good season,” Stanly County Fair Secretary Pat Bowers said.

Stanly County Fair Treasurer Olee Bowers’ favorite part of the fair is seeing the crowds — especially the children.

“I love to see them walk in with their little eyes sparkling,” Bowers said.

The children will have plenty to smile about, as visitors to the fair will have the opportunity to ride around 25 rides this year, including the Gondola and the Fireball.

There will also be musical events each night at the outdoor stage.

Stage events and rides will both be free with general admission, which is $12 per person. On Thursday, students will be able to receive $4 off the admission price in honor of Student Day.

Visitors are welcome to participate in the Elvis Contest Thursday night. Anyone interested should contact the fair offices at (704) 983-2913 or contact Wayne Rockwell at (704) 983-8932. Participants should be at least 18 years of age.

Thursday and Friday nights will feature Figure 8 Races, while a Demolition Derby will be held on Saturday night.

Livestock shows exhibiting pigs, goats, sheep and cattle will take place on Friday night and Sunday afternoon.

The fair opens Thursday and Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday through Monday at 3 p.m.

There will be something for everyone.

“We want everybody to come and have a good time,” Pat Bowers said.
