The Arc of Stanly County, a division of Monarch, was named by The Arc
of North Carolina as a 2012 Distinguished Affiliate during The Arc of
North Carolina’s Annual Awards Luncheon held on Sept. 22, 2012
in Wilmington, N.C.
The Distinguished Affiliate honor recognizes the dedication, commitment,
and the professionalism of the chapters of The Arc of North Carolina.
The recipients of this designation meet the stringent criteria and have
provided advocacy, instituted programs, encouraged diversity,
participated in and supported activities that benefit people with
intellectual and developmental disabilities in the communities where the
organizations serve. Although there are more than 30 local chapters of
The Arc located across North Carolina, The Arc of Stanly County was
among a small group of the chapters that received the recognition.
“For more than five decades, The Arc of Stanly has worked diligently to
advocate on behalf of, provide a voice and support for people with
disabilities,” Dr. Peggy Terhune, Monarch CEO/executive director of the
Arc of Stanly County. “We are honored to be recognized as a
distinguished affiliate by the Arc of North Carolina. This award is a
source of great pride to our organization.”
In 1958, the Arc of Stanly County was formed by a small group of
concerned parents and other concerned individuals who wanted to help
family members with intellectual and developmental disabilities. That
group became The Arc of Stanly, an organization that continues to
provide advocacy for individuals with disabilities and their families.
In 1981, Stanly County Vocational Workshop, Greenwood Center and
Chivington House, consolidated into Arc Services. The Arc of Stanly
remained as the parent company and advocacy arm. In 2008, Arc Services
became Monarch.
Today, Monarch provides supports and services statewide to more than
12,000 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental
illness and substance use disorders in approximately 55 North Carolina
counties. Together, Monarch and the Arc of Stanly County has been a
longstanding chapter member of the Arc of North Carolina.
Monarch is nationally accredited by The Council on Quality and
Leadership and is CABHA certified. The agency is an affiliate chapter of
The Arc of North Carolina and The Arc of the United States. To learn how
