The City Youth Ballet presents its bi-annual performance of “The Nutcracker” Nov. 30-Dec. 2 at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center, Albemarle.
The performances on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 will begin at 7 p.m. and the Dec. 2 performance will start at 3 p.m.
Adult tickets are $10 each and children 12 and under are $8 each. Tickets may be purchased at Albemarle Academy of Dance from 4-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday or at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center Box Office. Albemarle Academy of Dance is at 26810 Ross Drive, Albemarle.
Professional choreography, along with elaborate costumes and sets, brings to life this Tchaikovsky classic. This year’s performance features the City Youth Ballet at their finest. Allow your family to be transported to Germany during the Victorian period. Witness the battle between marching toy soldiers and mischievous mice, a glowing Christmas tree that magically grows, dancing snowflakes, waltzing flowers and finally, join Clara on her tour of the Land of Sweets.
The City Youth Ballet announces that Abby Neal will be Clara. Neal, 13, is the daughter of Ryan and Jodi Neal of Albemarle. She is an eighth grader at West Stanly Middle School. She has been dancing since the age of 2 with Albemarle Academy of Dance and also has trained at USC Summer Intensives. This will be her fifth Nutcracker performance.
Jesse Springer will be the Sugar Plum Fairy; Andrew Carr, Ph.D., returns as The Cavalier; and The Nutcracker Prince will be performed by Terry Mathis.
Springer, a member of the Balasole Dance Company in New York, is also the director of the competitive dance team, The Showoffs, and an instructor at Albemarle Academy of Dance. She is a graduate of the N.C. School of the Arts and earned her BFA in Dance Performance from East Carolina University.
Carr, Assoc. artistic director of E.E. Motion, has performed with the Kansas City Ballet, Sacramento Ballet and the Washington Ballet. He began his training with the MidColumbia Regional Ballet and continued his training with Washington School of Ballet. He received his BS in dance at Indiana University.
Mathis is majoring in dance at East Carolina University. He has danced and studied in New York, Walt Disney World and Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. These professional dancers are joined with over 60 dancers ranging in age from 5 to adult. Dancers are from Stanly, Montgomery and Cabarrus counties.
The City Youth Ballet is part of Uwharrie Youth Arts, which is dedicated to increasing awareness and involvement of youth in the performing arts in Stanly County and all other counties in the Uwharrie Lakes region of North Carolina. Uwharrie Youth Arts exists to connect and engage youth, educators and families to the performing arts in innovative, meaningful and participatory ways.
In addition to the regular performance, the 2012 Nutcracker will be presented three times to approximately 3,000 local school children, in grades K-8, on Nov. 20.

On May 15, Stanly Community College (SCC) celebrated its 42nd commencement day to honor and recognize the achievements of all the graduates. In honor of National Kids Safety Day, Safe Kids Stanly County had a Safe Kids Day Saturday morning in front of All 4 Fun Inflatables in Albemarle. Community joins for Day of Prayer
Residents and officials bowed their heads in prayer Thursday afternoon in observance of the National Day of Prayer. In Stanly County, events were conducted at noon in the cities of Locust and Albemarle, and in the town of Oakboro.
