Thursday, February 4, 2010 — Along with all other Lions Clubs in the state, the Albemarle Lions Club’s objective is to help the visually impaired. Most funds raised by the Lions in this state are used to supply physical and medical aid, and to maintain a vacation center, both for the visually impaired.
The Albemarle Lions Club also hosts parties twice a year for visually impaired individuals to provide them the opportunity to gather with others from Stanly County.
“Some very welcome help came to us at a time when we were wondering how to find the money to meet our Christmas party objective,” said Brian Wilkinson, president of the club.
Gray Stone Day School students Jordan Hatley and Ryan Rosier decided to support the Albemarle Lion’s Club for their service project required for graduation. They wanted to help with the Christmas party. As a fundraiser, they sponsored a raffle for gift cards to area merchants and raised more than $800.
They also helped assemble gift bags for the guests, sent invitations and created name tags. At the party, they helped set tables and assisted Lions Club members as they hosted the guests.
The party was held recently at the Stanly Regional Medical Center in the Magnolia Room. Seventy-five guests were in attendance.
“My great-grandmother suffered towards the end of her life with macular degeneration,” Hatley said.
“It is important to have an organization that supports the visually impaired and offers them opportunities they might not otherwise receive.”
As leader of the team, Hatley initiated the project and oversaw many of the activities.
The Lions Club also puts American flags outside downtown businesses on national holidays. The businesses pay an annual fee and this provides funds for the club to continue its good works.
The two students helped put out flags in the morning and took them up in the evening on several holidays.
“This has been a great experience for me,” Rosier said.
“This opportunity provided me with a new understanding of how volunteerism can benefit an organization and a community.”
