Albemarle church serves as donation site for Haiti relief efforts

Thursday, February 4, 2010 — In response to the need for assistance in Haiti following the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck there on Jan. 12, and the aftershocks that followed, Albemarle First Presbyterian Church, at 126 W. North St., will serve as a collection site for Haiti Disaster Kits.

“Kits for Haiti Relief” is sponsored by the Presbytery of Charlotte (Presbyterian Church U.S.A.) Mission and Justice Global/National Missions and Community Disaster Response Teams. Albemarle First Presbyterian is a member church of the PCUSA denomination.

There are three different disaster kits that are needed. Items to be included in each are:

Baby Kit: 6 cloth diapers; 2 T-Shirts or undershirts (no onesies); 2 washcloths; 2 gowns or sleepers; 2 diaper pins; 2 baby blankets. (Items should be wrapped inside one of the blankets and secured with both diaper pins.)

Hygiene Kits: 1 hand towel (16x28, no fingertip or bath towels); 1 washcloth; 1 wide tooth comb; 1 nail clipper (no metal files or emery boards); 1 bar of soap (bath size in wrapper); 1 toothbrush in original packaging (no toothpaste due to expiration date issues); 6 Band-Aids. (All items should be sealed in one-gallon plastic bag with zipper closure.)

Clean-up buckets: one 5 gallon bucket with resealable lid; 5 scouring pads; 7 sponges of assorted sizes; 1 scrub brush; 1 package cleaning towels (18 reusable, like Easy Wipes); 1 box dry laundry detergent (50-78 oz.); 1 liquid concentrated household cleaner (like Lysol – 12 oz.); 1 bottle Liquid disinfectant dish soap (like Dawn – 25 oz.); 50 clothespins; Clothesline (two 50 ft. or one 100 ft.); 5 dust masks; 2 pair Latex gloves (like Playtex); 1 pair work gloves; 24 count roll heavy-duty trash bags (33-45 gallon); 1 bottle of non aerosol insect repellant. These kits are a tangible way for individuals and groups within our churches and communities to respond to the disaster in Haiti. The kits will be delivered regularly for a long period of time and will be distributed through Church World Service and other organizations.

Collection days/times at Albemarle First Presbyterian Church are Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
