City sets public hearings

Friday, February 9, 2012 — A group of eighth-grade students had an opportunity to see local government at work during Monday night’s meeting of the Albemarle City Council.

Albemarle Middle School students were participants in Youth in Government Day, which is sponsored by the Albemarle Optimist Club. The students were each assigned to a city official to learn about his or her duties. After spending the day shadowing the position, they are invited to the council meeting that same evening where they sit beside their mentors.

During the announced delegations portion of the meeting, Albemarle resident Arthur Bailey of Spruce Street brought his concerns to the board regarding the condition of a home located between Graham and Spruce Street. According to Bailey, the yard is covered in garbage and the appearance is bringing down property values of neighboring homes. Bailey said he had brought the issue to the attention of the planning and zoning board and the problem has been an ongoing issue. In addition, he had concerns about individuals speeding on the road, calling it a safety hazard, especially for children and disabled individuals.

City council voted to send the matter to the police and city staff for further review.

Several public hearings were scheduled during the meeting. A public hearing to consider a conditional use permit allowing storage buildings at 720 NC 24-27 will be Feb. 20.

Three public hearings were scheduled for March 5, including one to consider a request to rezone 17.5 acres on Snuggs Street from R-10 Residential to General Highway Business, one for further action on minimum housing code violations at 401 Lincolnton St. and one to consider a text change amendment regarding the spacing of sexually oriented businesses.

Second readings of two ordinances were passed. The first ordinance designates two 2-hour parking spaces in front of 125 S. Third St. A motion was made by Councilwoman Judy Holcomb and seconded by Councilman Ed Underwood. The motion carried with councilmembers Ronnie Michael and Martha Sue Hall opposed. Ordinance 12-04, regarding the placement of yard waste for collection, was passed unanimously.

Also during the meeting, city council voted to donate three used 40-foot power poles to the North Carolina Air National Guard Fire Department and officer Kevin Boone was presented a retirement certificate for 4.2 years of service.

Albemarle will host a community blood drive from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 22 at Fire Station One/East Community Police Office.

The next meeting of Albemarle City Council will be 7 p.m. Feb. 20, at Albemarle City Hall.
