As daughter’s birthday nears, family uses Gifts from Angels to celebrate her life, assist others

Wednesday, October 31, 2012 — Jami Ann Pless would have been 24 on Nov. 2.

The young Locust resident was killed in a car accident on April 6 in Anson County.

Her mother, Paula Troutman Fox, said the “family was struggling with how to manage through her birthday and the holidays.”

Family members decided to accept games through Nov. 4 to give to Gifts from Angels, which donated children’s games to area children’s hospitals. It is a project through Angel Thompson, a child whose family is friends with the Foxes. Seven-year-old Angel has a recurring brain tumor and is having weekly chemo treatments.

She gathered 1,000 games last year for donation and was looking to double that number this year, Fox said, but the treatments have kept the game flow down.

“The games do need to be new because of infection control issues for these children,” Fox said.

Angel’s dad, Alan, is assistant EMS director for Cabarrus County and a pastor for two local churches.

“He has been an incredible comfort to our family over the past six months,” Fox said.

“They are happy yo get any games (board games, cards, craft sets, etc.) that will help keep children busy while they’re in the hospital.

“Alan did tell me that they typically receive fewer items for children age 8 and under, so there s a larger need in that area. He also mentioned that during Angel’s last hospitalization she was given some window clings which she used to decorate her room versus a hospital room, so window clings have been added to the list of items. Angel’s family collects games year round, so the back end really is open.”

Angel was diagnosed with a brain tumor (childhood cancer) in March 2010. While at Levine Children’s Hospital, Angel played many games to pass the time, and decided to collect games for donation following her initial release from the hospital.

Anyone wishing to donate can contact the Thompsons at (704) 791-1762 or amt6973@gmail.com or the Foxes at pfroxrnmicn@ gmail.com or (704) 888-3960.
