Business awards $50K grant for food

Wednesday, January 9, 2013 — The town of Richfield was excited when the Walmart Express opened in 2011.

The store must be equally as excited to be there because it has proven to be generous with the town and those programs of good works.

At its opening, the store gave $3,000 to help with the proposed veterans memorial and $2,000 for the town park.

Richfield Elementary was also given a $1,000 grant.

Now, another Walmart grant has really upped the support for the kids at the school who find themselves in need of a good meal when the school’s doors are closed.

A $50,000 grant was given from the store to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina of Charlotte.

Those funds will be used to begin a backpack program that will assist in helping children who may not have adequate access to good nutrition in not having to go without.

“We are proud of our local community for participating in Walmart’s Golden Spark promotion. Their thoughtfulness has allowed us the opportunity to receive this grant,” said Kay Carter, executive director at Second Harvest.

“Through this funding, we will be able to provide backpacks filled with food to children in the community when school meals are not available.”

The backpack program provides children with easy to prepare foods to take home on the weekends or during holiday vacations when free or reduced school lunches are not available to them.

Recent statistics show there are 3,500 children in Stanly County who face a food insecurity.

With the Walmart grant Second Harvest will be able to provide 100 children with 60,000 meals throughout the next three years.
