Badin Mayor James Harrison took the best diplomatic path he could concerning the longstanding situation between the county and ALCOA.
“It’s the 900 pound gorilla in the room that nobody wants to talk about,” Harrison said.
“And it seems to be alive and well for 2013, too.”
Badin has had many positive dealings with ALCOA over the years, including 2012 as it prepares for 2013 and the 100th anniversary of the town. Just recently, ALCOA has helped with funding for Christmas activities and will assist in the publication of the book that will be released on the history of the town. The company is also involved in many other ways as the celebration begins Jan. 11-12 with a special play about the town’s history.
But the battles between ALCOA and the county, particularly the Stanly County Commission, have put a damper on some things for Badin.
“The town is a bystander, and we know what we’d like to see,” Harrison said.
“We are kind of in limbo until it is decided. It’s affecting our park and second entry (to the town) and also our lakeside. All of it is in limbo until that gets decided.
“That, to me, we’ll be facing in 2013 and we have been for the last 10 years.”
But it wasn’t all bad news in 2012. The town and many other individuals have been working hard to line up performances, schedule events and do things within the town to mark the special year-long celebration.
It will kick off with a pageant and play at the Badin Elementary School auditorium on Jan. 11-13. The play was written by Heather Ross Miller and Natasha Wall is directing it with the Uwharrie Players also participating.
The book on Badin’s history is being put together by David Summerlin and Johnny Westbrook and will soon be available.
ALCOA is sponsoring it by saying it will pay for the production of the book, which takes a historical look with words and photos at Badin from 1913 until present.
Other activities scheduled for this year include:
Jan. 26: Badin Volunteer Fire Department will have a barbecue fundraiser;
Feb. 16: Poor Man’s Supper at the fire station;
April 13: centennial parade and concert with Badin native Lou Donaldson, a jazz musician;
May (date not determined): golf tournament;
June 1: Historic Badin Triathlon;
June 21-22: Hardaway Pow Wow;
July 4: fireworks over Badin Lake with military band;
Sept. 20-21: Best of Badin Festival;
Oct. 12: Old fashioned camp meeting and Badin Volunteer Fire Department barbecue;
Dec. 3: Christmas in Badin 1913; and
December: Town-wide lighting contest and burying of time capsule.
