Tuesday, August 4, 2009 — Talks of a farmer’s market and the success of a local museum highlight the discussions held during Monday’s regular meeting of the Nor-wood Business Association (NBA).
Chair Matt Irvin brought the group abreast with details concerning the status of starting a farmer’s market in town. At present, the idea has been put on hold, but will likely be at the forefront of the group’s agenda soon.
The aim would be to use the centrally located, empty town-owned parking lot in front of the Family Dollar store, which provides an ample amount of space for parking and vendors to set up tents and tables to sell farm goods as well as arts and crafts.
The open house event held recently at the Norwood Museum was also a point of dialogue. It was estimated that some 200-300 people stopped by, with a large number of them supporting the Wall of Honor dedicated to military personnel. Many were also on hand during the dedication of the McMahon room.
It was noted that the museum is funded by donations and has 501(c)(3) status.
Other talks included the mentioning of an upcoming Arbor Day planning meeting between Irvin, town administrator Dwight Smith and others to be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 5. The annual Arbor Day Festival is scheduled for April 23 and 24, 2010.
It was mentioned that Professional Flooring, a business formerly located on Randalls Church Road, had relocated to an in town location, occupying the building that once housed the Berry Busy Store.
Tom Ramseur, president and CEO of the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce, gave information about upcoming events, including nominating persons to participate in the Leadership Stanly program, now in its 22nd year.
Ramseur also mentioned the upcoming reverse raffle and silent auction — an annual chamber fundraising event that will be held at the Senior Center on Aug. 22.
Kathy Almond, director of the Stanly Community College Small Business Center, made mention of the upcoming Advertising Expo in conjunction with the Stanly News & Press. The event is free, and will take place on Sept. 1 from 7:30-10:30 a.m. at the Dennis Community Room on the SCC campus.
A North Carolina wage and hour seminar will be held Sept. 22 from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at SCC.
