Comic illustrator to speak at GOBA meeting

CNHI

Tuesday, March 2, 2010 — Marcus Hamilton, illustrator of the Dennis the Menace cartoon panel, will be the guest speaker at 6 p.m. March 4 for the Greater Oakboro Business Association meeting at Oakboro Music Hall.

Hamilton’s program will consist of several songs, a comedy routine and a short demonstration of “How to Draw Dennis.”

Food for the evening will be a catered barbecue dinner. Cost is $9 per plate. The event is free to the public, but tickets are required. Contact Becky Rowell at (704) 485-2065 for ticket information.

Hamilton was born in Lexington and graduated from Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, majoring in commercial art. In 1965, he and his wife, Kaye, moved to Charlotte, where he worked in the Art Department of WBTV.

In 1972, Hamilton began a career as a freelance illustrator doing artwork for such publications as “Golf Digest” and “Saturday Evening Post.” But in 1993, his career and life took an abrupt turn when he responded to a TV interview in which Hank Ketcham, creator of Dennis the Menace, suggested that he would like to retire someday. Over a three year period, Ketcham trained Hamilton to take over drawing the daily, Monday through Saturday, cartoon panel, which is syndicated worldwide.

On May 28, 2005, Hamilton was awarded the National Cartoonists Society’s Annual Award for Best Newspaper Panel of 2004 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The special evening meeting is designed to attract individuals and business owners who might not have the opportunity to attend a regular noon GOBA meeting. Any persons interested in the activities and development of the business community of Oakboro is welcomed to become a member.
