Stanly farmers elect FSA Committee

Wednesday, February 7, 2012 — Serving on the USDA Stanly County Farm Service Agency Committee for 2012 are Charles F. “Butch” Brooks, chairperson; Keith A. Hill, vice-chairperson; and Curtis R. Furr, voting member.

These farmers were elected by their peers and each represents their area of the county. Once elected a committee person serves a three-year term and may serve up to three consecutive three-year terms. Brooks and Hill are both serving in their last term.

Each year the County Committee (COC) establishes an organizational structure deciding who will serve in which official capacity for that calendar year. They also select an advisor or advisors for groups which may not be represented on the elected board each year.

For the past several years, Betty S. McSwain has served as an advisor to the COC representing female farmers of Stanly County. The current board has farming experience in most of the major agriculture areas of Stanly County, including the production of commodity crops, such as soybeans, corn, cotton and small grains; grazing and forage crops; cattle; poultry; dairy; and some specialty crops.

County committees are a direct link between the farm community and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Committee members are a critical component of the day-to-day operations of FSA. They help deliver FSA farm programs at the local level. Farmers who serve on committees help decide the kind of programs their counties will offer. They work to make FSA agricultural programs serve the needs of local producers.
