Monday, January 30, 2012 —
The Uwharrie Players have hired Caroline Firczak to direct their upcoming production of “The Fantasticks,” which opens on March 2 at the Dennis Vineyards events facility on Endy Road just off N.C. 24/27, west of Albemarle.
Firczak is taking on double duty as she will also serve as the music director for this well-known musical classic.
She is a graduate of Winthrop University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music. Firczak teaches voice and piano in Salisbury at her studio, “Music with Caroline,” and also at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.
Some of her past teaching experiences include jobs with Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, the University of Kentucky, Matthews Play-house, Gray Stone Day School and the Charlotte Academy of Music.
Firczak has served as music director for many productions in the Charlotte area, but the Uwharrie Players’ production will be her first venture as both music director and over-all artistic director. In 2009, she received a Metrolina Theatre Association nomination for the music direction of a production of “The Fantasticks” in Fort Mill, S.C. Area theater goers may remember her as Maria in the Uwharrie Players’ 2009 production of “The Sound of Music,” for which she also received an MTA nomination.
Other productions in which Firczak has had leading roles include Marian in “The Music Man,” Sarah Brown in “Guys and Dolls,” Shelby in “Steel Magnolias,” Laurey in “Oklahoma!” and Lois in “Kiss Me, Kate.”
Firczak is originally from Concord, but now lives in Stanly County. She had this to say about directing the Uwharrie Players’ upcoming production: “I believe it’s easy to see how ‘The Fantasticks’ earned the title of ‘longest running show in American theatre history’. A beautiful piece of theatre, this show comments on some of the most profound universal experiences in perhaps the best way possible, with simplicity, frankness, and humor. I’m honored to be a part of this Uwharrie Players production, which will feature an outstanding cast and production team that will do thorough justice to this timeless work. This show will also be a mix of favorite actors from Uwharrie Players history and talented newcomers to the group; a wonderful parallel with ‘The Fantastick’s’ message.”
Performance dates for “The Fantasticks” are the first two weekends in March, March 2-4 and March 9-11. Friday and Saturday performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees will begin at 2:30 p.m.
Tickets are available in advance at Starnes Jewelers in Albemarle and at B&D Bookstore in Burle-son Square. They will also be sold at the door at Dennis Vineyards beginning one hour prior to each performance. Tickets are $15 for adults (ages 22-59) and $12 for seniors (ages 60+) and juniors (ages 21 and under).
Additional information about this production and about special group rate prices is available by calling (704) 269-8675.
