Tuesday, February 9, 2010 — The Stanly County Board of Elections Office inside Stanly Commons was full of activity Monday as filing for the May 4 Primary opened at noon.
Justin Burr was the first in line as he filed to retain his NC 67th District House seat. Republican Burr will seek his second term.
Five Republicans filed for the three spots up for grabs in the May primary in the county commissioners race. Incumbent Gene McIntyre of New London was joined by four others — Ron Crawley of New London, Josh Morton of Albemarle, Mickey Furr of Locust and Harold Greene of Locust.
In an interview with the SNAP last week, Crawley outlined his goals as commissioner. His story can be found today on page 11A. Other candidates will be profiled in upcoming additions.
In addition to McIntyre, the three seats on the county commission are currently held by Democrat Sherrill Smith and Republican Lindsey Dunevant, neither of whom filed Monday. They have until noon on Feb. 26 to file.
Another key local race in 2010 is for sheriff. Democrat Rick Burris filed for his second four-year term as Stanly County Sheriff Monday. Two Republicans, former sheriff Tony Frick and former sheriff deputy George T. Burris, both filed Monday. At least one other Republican is expected to file prior to the Feb. 26 deadline.
Republican Michael Huneycutt filed to retain his seat as Stanly County Clerk of Court. If elected, this would be Huneycutt’s second four-year term.
Vicky Watson of Gold Hill, a former school board member, filed to run for an at-large seat on the board. There are two at-large seats to be decided in November. They are currently held by Chairman Jeff Chance and Vice Chairman Robin Whittaker. Two other school board seats will be decided. They are currently held by Melvin Poole (No. 6) and Mitchell Edwards (No. 7).
