Thursday, December 14, 2006 — Two people were injured but are on the road to recovery following a four-car crash around 6 p.m. Tuesday on N.C. 24-27 near Newt Road.

Sylvia Hitch Burke, 71, of Lake House Lane, Charlotte, hit three vehicles causing about $23,000 in damages after she veered left of the center line in her 1994 Buick.

She was traveling west on the highway when she crossed the line, hit Raymond Alan Frick’s 1995 Ford pick-up.

She struck the truck in the left rear fender, knocking the truck bed off the left side of the road. The truck continued off the right side and struck a utility pole.

After hitting the truck, causing about $5,500 in damage, Burke’s Buick spun around back into her lane and then back across the center line into a second vehicle driving behind Frick.

Leila Lee Ely, 29, of Charlotte, was traveling behind Frick in her 2005 Chevrolet when Burke struck her in the front left fender knocking her off the left side of the road.

Ely’s vehicle sustained an estimated $8,000 worth of damage in the collision and she was treated and released from Stanly Regional Medical Center (SRMC).

As Burke was veering left of the center line, the car behind her, driven by Roger Edward Honeycutt, 45, of 302 Pee Dee Ave., Norwood, continued in the right lane.

After colliding with Ely, Burke swung back into the right lane and into the path of Honeycutt’s 1996 Dodge which struck her with the front right fender doing about $700 of damage.

By the end of the chain reaction of collisions Burke wound up with $9,000 damage to her car. She is listed in good condition at SRMC.
