Sunday, November 30, 2008 — Confederate Chevrolet came to Albemarle in 1933 and had a successful run, selling 65,629 automobiles before the Nance family sold its business to Eric McCauley.
The business on U.S. 52 North is still in the tradition of selling American-made automobiles that are the “heartbeat of America,” and as of October 2007 has operated as McCauley Chevrolet. Though the name and other key factors may have changed, one familiar face still proudly graces the dealership.
Since November 1969, Stanly County native Elaine McCroskey has worked at the county’s only Chevy dealer, doing what she describes as “a little bit of everything.”
Currently working in customer service and as a switchboard operator, McCroskey thinks that the transition of ownership was not a big fuss at all.
“It was a very smooth transition,” McCroskey said.
“There are some new people, but basically the same kind of good people.”
For the past 39 years, McCroskey has enjoyed her career at the dealership under both names and looks forward to the future.
“The people and the work environment is great,” she said.
“It gets to where people seem like your family.”
McCroskey and her husband Larry have two daughters and four grandchildren.
