Tuesday, October 7, 2008 — Janet Sistare, executive director for United Way of Stanly County, announced to members of Greater Oakboro Business Association (GOBA) about a plan for an information referral system.
Sistare said she was researching a 211 system for the county that could be accessed from both mobile phones and landline phones.
“This will be used for non-emergency assistance and will be available 24 hours, 7 days a week, all year long,” said Sistare.
She also said the line will be multi-lingual and that it will hopefully eliminate non-emergency calls to 911.
The total cost of the project will be $5,000 to setup the system, with a $5,000 yearly maintenance fee.
Sistare said she is hoping to implement a charity tracker to help fill in the gaps for individuals within the county that do not receive the assistance they need, as well as catch those who are abusing the system.
Sistare also explained what United Way of Stanly County organizations have done to assist families and individuals in the area, and she explained that the United Way of Stanly County only serviced one county.
It is not like the United Way of Central Carolina that services Mecklenburg, Anson, Union, South Iredell and Cabarrus counties, and she ensured GOBA members that the same issues presented to the United Way of Central Carolina is not present in the United Way of Stanly County organization.
Also during the meeting:
• Mayor Joyce Little announced the town would be presented a check for wastewater improvements on Oct. 15 at 1:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall at First Baptist Church of Oakboro.
• Ryan Story and Jim Cameron assured everyone that the local, community banks are in great shape and are not seriously affected by the economic crisis.
• Bob Barbee, co-owner of Oakboro Music Hall and adjoining restaurant, explained that the buildings will be used to continue servicing the community, but he and partner Terry Whitley would like to make sure they find a long-term business to occupy the building.
In the meantime, the bands that are scheduled to perform in the Music Hall will continue, and it will also be available for business gatherings, as well as events like receptions and reunions.
