Sunday, October 7, 2007 — At 7 p.m. Thursday at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center, individuals have an opportunity to hear an over-view of the NC General Statutes related to legal rights of landowners regarding unauthorized use of recreational vehicles on their property.
Julian Philpott, legal council with North Carolina Farm Bureau, will speak on the legal issues for landowners regarding the use of recreational vehicles.
There will also be a representative from local law enforcement to discuss legal enforcement options for property owners.
It will also be an opportunity for recreational vehicle owners to become more aware of laws regarding the use of these vehicles and the consequences of unauthorized or inappropriate use.
If a rider owns the land he rides on there is usually no issue; however, oftentimes the riding occurs on land owned by someone else. If the rider has properly requested permission from the landowner and abides by the landowner’s guidelines then there is generally no problem.
Recently, it has become an issue for agricultural land-owners. These problems sometimes occur even when riders have permission from the landowners but choose to disregard guidelines for the use of recreational vehicles on the property.
Some recreational vehicle riders have driven directly across a planted field of corn, cotton or soybeans essentially destroying the crops. This act is a total disregard for the livelihood of the farmer. Such incidents spoil riding opportunities for everyone.
