Tuesday, October 2, 2007 — Now well into its second year, Stanly Early College High School (SEC) is looking to recruit a new class of 50 freshmen for the 2008-2009 school year.
Currently, there are 38 sophomores and 39 freshmen enrolled in the five-year high school that offers students the opportunity to graduate with both an associate degree from Stanly Community College and a high school diploma from SEC at the same time.
The joint venture between Stanly County Schools and Stanly Community College is housed on the SCC campus and is totally free, just as the public schools.
In addition, SEC features small classrooms, 12-15 students and full access to all SCC facilities.
“We’re looking to get the word out early this year so that potential students and their parents will have ample time to evaluate the school,” said John Balls, SEC dean of instruction.
Joyce Hansen, SEC school counselor, has already met with all eighth-grade counselors within Stanly County Schools and is mailing a letter to each eighth-grader in the system.
Furthermore, Balls said the current SEC student body includes students who were previously home-schooled and attended private school.
“We’re open to any and all rising ninth-graders within Stanly County,” Balls said.
At the conclusion of the school’s first semester, SEC officials were pleased with the attendance, academic achievement and extra-curricular participation of its students body.
“Overall our attendance rate was 97 percent and 35 percent of our students had perfect attendance,” Hansen said.
“We were very excited that 45 percent of our students made honor roll and 100 percent participated in at least one of our 10 clubs.”
To answer any questions and to give a detailed overview of the school, Hansen said SEC will hold an information forum Nov. 8 for all interested eighth-graders and their parents.
Refreshments will be served inside the Webb Center from 6-6:30 p.m. The forum will follow at the Dennis Auditorium inside the Kelley Building at 6:30.
The earliest applications will be accepted is Feb. 1, 2008 and a second forum will be Feb. 7, 2008. The last day to apply April 1, 2008.
The 50 new students will be selected from the pool of applicants.
