Friends of the Land promote educational forum series

Thursday, September 4, 2008 — Friends of the Land in Stanly County will sponsor a free series of educational forums for the public.

The first forum will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at Oakboro Music Hall. An optional dinner begins at 6 p.m. at the adjoining Big John’s Smokehouse.

Cabarrus County Manager John Day will be the first speaker. He will share Cabarrus’ farmland preservation plan, a description of their sustainable community effort, plus their recent Central Area Plan.

Day graduated with honors in philosophy from UNC-Chapel Hill and received a master’s in public administration from that university. He has served as Cabarrus County manager for more than five years. He has been very interested in environmental issues and sustainability, and has initiated several programs of that nature in Cabarrus County.

Friends of the Land’s mission is to enhance the quality of life in the county by advocating responsible land use planning and by serving as a voice for conservation of our natural, cultural, and historic resources. This educational series will provide Stanly County’s citizens more information and options about building a vision for how they want the county to look and thrive in 2030.
