Investigators looking into death of 5-month-old

Thursday, September 4, 2008 — Stanly County investigators are looking further into the suspicious death of an infant.

Five-month-old Marcus Ewing Benjamin Jr. was taken to Stanly Regional Medical Center just before midnight on Aug. 27 by Stanly County EMS. He was stabilized and transported to Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast in Concord, arriving at 3:45 a.m. Aug. 28. At CMC, he was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), where he underwent several tests.

He was placed on life support, which was suspended on Aug. 30 at 1:45 p.m., the recorded time of death.

The child’s mother, Ashley Fraiter, said that she fed the child before laying him down to sleep. He started choking and Fraiter tried to clear his airways. After her attempts failed, the child’s father (Benjamin Sr.) began CPR while Fraiter phoned for help.

An autopsy has been performed by the Mecklenburg County Office of the Medical Examiner and a preliminary report has been submitted.

The Stanly County Sheriff’s Office has interviewed a number of witnesses while the investigation continues. They are also waiting for the full autopsy report before releasing any more information.
