Stanly County retired school personnel meet
Sunday, August 24, 2008 — The Stanly County Unit of the North Carolina Retired School Personnel hosted a meeting for District VI NCRSP at Dennis Vineyards.
Eighty-two members from Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Union County, Kannapolis, and Cabarrus County enjoyed a day at the Vineyards.
Fruit, pastries, tea, and coffee awaited arriving guests on the veranda overlooking the vineyards. A formal welcome to Stanly County was given by Tom Ramseur, president and CEO of the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce. Two groups began a winery and tasting tour led by Sandon and Amy Dennis.
At noon the groups returned to A Place in the Vineyard for a buffet luncheon. Doris Eudy gave the Thought for the Day, Three Things of Life.
During dessert, Susan Marks of Phoenix Fashions, Seven Lakes, presented a fashion show using her fashions and NCRSP ladies as models.
A ceremony of remembrance was led by Louise Miller, necrology chairman of district VI. Pat MacLean, president of district VI, conducted the business meeting.
Carmella Hendrick and Charlotte Maness provided the ending for the day at the Vineyards with a selection of musical favorites.
The Stanly County RSP shows appreciation to the following people/organizations for helping make the day special: The Stanly News and Press, Stanly County Chamber of Com-merce, Stanly County Convention and Visitor Bureau, Bank of Stanly-Locust, Uwharrie Capital Corporation, Oakboro Busi-ness Association, Dennis Vineyards, Endy Produce and Garden Center, Charlie’s Hardware and Garden Center, Tim Sullivan, Car-mella Hedrick, Charlotte Maness, Susan Marks, Diane Chance, Priscilla Perry, Ann Nance, Libby Phillips, Kay Cochran, Betty Morgan, Ann Dawson, Doris Eudy, Jo Allen, Pat Bramlett, Linda Bell and Drucy Tysinger.
The first meeting of the Stanly County Unit of Retired School Personnel for the 2008-2009 year will be held at Dennis Vineyards at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 25.

Fair opens tonight
Rides, games, music and more hit the Stanly County Fairgrounds tonight in the form of the 76th annual Stanly County Fair, sponsored by American Legion Post 76. This year, the rides will be put on by J&J Amusements.

Pedestrians, motorists urged to be cautious at Pfeiffer
A Pfeiffer University student had a brush with death when crossing the road on Wednesday.
According to Misenheimer Police Chief Tracey Wyrick, the student assumed that an approaching vehicle would stop as a courtesy. This misunderstanding led to the student nearly being struck. -
West teacher receives state business award
A local teacher has won one of the highest education awards in the state.
John Thompson, a business education teacher at West Stanly High School (WSHS), recently received the Orus B. Sutton Award, which is presented to the Outstanding Business and Information Technology Teacher of the Year in North Carolina. -
Committee discusses renovations to school facilities
Many of the local schools will be getting a makeover this school year. In its meeting last week, the Stanly County Board of Education Facilities Committee discussed specific renovations to the schools.

Correspondent no longer with TV station
UNC-TV Senior Legislative Correspondent Eszter Vajda is no longer employed at the state’s public television network as of Aug. 18, according to Gail Zimmermann, associate general manager of the station.
