Weight loss class offered
Sunday, August 24, 2008 — Corporate weight-losing challenges are on fire across the country, with heavy participation rates and successes. Locally, the flame is being fanned by a group in the western end of the county.
The Health & Wellness Program at Love’s Grove United Methodist Church in Stanfield targets weight loss and other health-related areas to help participants lead healthier lifestyles.
The initiative was started by Dianne Greene, a retired nurse, who presented the idea during the church’s annual goal setting meeting.
“I have friends in Michigan who deal with Herbalife,” Greene said, referring to the weight-loss products sold by the international health company.
“The church set goals at the beginning of the year, and losing weight was one of them.”
The purpose of the program is four-fold, including making healthy food choices, evaluating lifestyle decisions, dealing with stress and developing an exercise program.
Classes are held at each weekly meeting, dealing with topics such as proteins, metabolism, stress and exercise and heart health.
The program, which will run for 12-weeks in its second cycle, is for everyone, though women show up in the largest numbers.
Of the eight people who initially participated, which included a married couple, 131 pounds total was lost, with the biggest loser shedding 18 pounds.
A monetary gift was given to the top three winners of the $30 assessment each participant pays at the program’s start. Fifty percent of the pot is given to the first place winner, 30 percent to second and 20 percent to third.
Weigh-ins are held every week and financial infractions are to be paid by those who break the rules, with $1 charged for every pound gained and $5 charged for not weighing in.
Weight issues are sensitive and Greene takes that into consideration.
“It doesn’t take long to break a habit, but it takes a while to learn a new one,” she said.
Knowing that 25.6 percent of North Carolina’s adults are obese deem programs like this and similar ones necessary to preserve healthy living, she said.
Classes are set to begin Tuesday. More information can be gathered by contacting Dianne Greene at (704) 888-1941.
