Sunday, July 27, 2008 — Stanly Community College (SCC) IT instructors recently took part in the SkillsUSA National Championships in Kansas City, Mo.
More than 5,000 technical and career education students experienced hands-on competition in more than 90 separate events.
SkillsUSA is a national organization serving more than 250,000 high school and college students, and professional members en-rolled in training programs in technical, skilled, and service occupations, including health occupations.
Corporations, trade associations and labor unions actively support SkillsUSA on a national level through financial aid, in-kind contributions, and involvement of their people in SkillsUSA activities.
SCC instructors Kelly Caudle, program head/information systems security and Cisco networking academy coordinator, and Trent Helms, instructor/computer and electronics engineering technology, served as judges for the Internetworking competition; and Dan Parmer, division chair/engineering technology, served as judge for the Telecommunications Cabling competition, and on the SkillsUSA National Education team.
“Every year the competition gets tougher for the students,” Caudle said.
“It’s great to be part of this educational experience. The students not only have a great time competing, but they also learn skills in leadership and teamwork.
“Technology is changing rapidly, and we encourage students to sharpen their technical skills at an early age.”
