Sunday, July 6, 2008 — Talent from across the county was on display Wednesday as the second annual talent show was held on the Union Power stage in Oakboro.
The show was part of the weeklong festivities for the 50th anniversary of the Oakboro Fourth of July Celebration.
“This not only is an opportunity for these contestants to showcase their talent, but it is also a time for everyone to fellowship together,” said Rev. Terrell Watts, pastor of First Baptist Church in Oakboro.
Watts helped to bring the talent show back to the Oakboro Fourth of July activities last year after nearly a 20-year hiatus.
Judges for the show included Watts; Amy Voger, instructor at the School of Music at First Baptist Church; Dana Jenkins, director of Family Services with the School of Music; Judy Tucker, executive director for the Miss Stanly County Pageant; Kristen Ferree, reigning Miss Stanly County; and Janice Watts, instructor at the School of Music.
There were 16 contestants divided into two categories, youth and adult.
The youth performed first with the youngest contestant, 4-year-old Stella Griffin, singing “Jesus Loves Me.”
She was followed by 10-year-old Hailey Efird singing “He Wasn’t;” 12-year-old Gavin Phillips playing “Night of the Terentella” on the piano; 9-year old Jessica Davis singing “Bubbly;” and Caitlin Carpenter singing “A Living Prayer” with Jerry Stanly accompanying on the guitar.
The youth category was rounded out with Mackenzie McCarthy singing “Don’t Forget to Remember Me;” Deeana Beachum singing “Summertime” and Cali Pals singing “Marry Me.”
The adult category followed with Jessie Rushing singing “Born to Fly;” Daniel Poole playing an original arrangement on the electric guitar; Nicole Williams singing “My Immortal;” and a trio consisting of Bucky, Laurel Huneycutt and Joy Smith, who sang “Three Wooden Crosses.”
Marshall Feis closed the competition with a lively fiddle playing to a medley of patriotic songs.
“I think this show is great for the community and I hope it grows every year. Oakboro is a talented place with lots of gifts. I am just happy I was able to be a part of this,” Watts said.
In the youth category, Carpenter and Stanly took first, followed by Davis with second and Phillips with third.
