Women Build a successful event

Thursday, April 24, 2008 — Stanly County Habitat for Humanity hosted its sixth annual Women Build Lunch-eon April 9 at Stanly Regional Medical. This year’s theme was “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and was emphasized by rainbow décor, as well as a yellow brick road and rainbow made of balloons. The family focus of this year’s luncheon was the Shankle family, represented by Nena Shankle.

Attendees were provided a buffet lunch and entertained by various speakers. Home-owner testimonies were given by Brenda Richardson and Brooke Garcia (Habitat’s Women Build Recipient of 2005).

Garcia also performed a beautiful rendition of “Some-where Over the Rainbow.” A short skit, written by Rev. Dr. Cathy Cook, was performed by members of the Talent Company and conveyed to the audience “there’s no place like home.”

The fundraising luncheon gathers corporate and individual table sponsors to help fund an upcoming Women Build. Tables were sponsored by: Albemarle ENT, Bank of Stanly, Brinn Timberlake/ Bear Insurance, Bowers Im-plement, Russ Hollins/Cen-tury 21, Cohen Construction, Conveyor Components Inc., Amy Shelton/Culp Lumber, First Bank, Linda Carter CPA, Jordan Homes Furniture Inc., McCauley Chevrolet, Lib Shelton/Shelton Insurance, Jane Lisk/South Central Oil, Betty Lambert/Southeastern Materials, Uwharrie Home Works, Wachovia, Karen Brown, Doris Eudy, Claudia Gresham-Shelton, Kim Huck-abee, Jerry Jordan, Dr. Linda Lawrence, Martha Lowder and Priscilla Perry.

Each sponsored table was adorned with flower centerpieces which were given as door prizes. These arrangements were donated by: A Countryside Florist, Designed Memories Florist, Harris Tee-ter, Harwood’s Florist, Locust ACE Hardware and Garden and Ruth’s Flowers and Gifts.

This event’s success was due to the hard work of the Women Build Luncheon Committee, which consists of Karen Brown, Nadine Bowers, Sally Eudy, Angela Krol, Audrey Rigsbee and Amy Shelton. Thanks are due to those who helped plan, attend and donate.

The Women Build is scheduled to start June 15 in the Norwood area. This is going to be a build combining Women and Youth for a 24-7 build. For more info, call (704) 985-1050 or visit www.habitatstanly.org.
