Sunday, March 29, 2009 — The North Carolina February unemployment rate was 10.7 percent, its highest since 1976, according to statistics released by the N.C. Employment Security Commission (ESC).
The increase was a full percentage point higher than January’s rate of 9.7 percent, making February the 13th consecutive month of rate increases.
Stanly County’s latest information will be released in early April.
“North Carolina continues to feel the effects of the nation’s economic crisis and the Employment Security Commission will continue to do all it can to help people looking for work,” said ESC Chairman Moses Carey Jr.
“Beginning in early April, those receiving unemployment benefits will get a boost. The ESC is set up to start paying an extra $25 a week to eligible claimants as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. This additional money can make a difference for families facing difficult circumstances.”
The additional $25 will be added to the amount eligible claimants currently receive and it will be retroactively paid to the week ending Feb. 28.
Seasonally adjusted employment decreased by 17,728 workers to 4,093,625. Unemployment increased by 51,902 workers to 491,067.
The number of workers who were unemployed but actively seeking work remains at an all-time high. Since this time last year, unemployment has increased by 253,850 people.
Employment is down by 194,477 workers since February 2008 when the state rate was 5.2 percent. In just a year, that rate has more than doubled.
