Thursday, January 8, 2009 — The Superior Courtroom at Stanly County Courthouse was standing room only at the swearing-in of newly elected Superior Court Judge Kevin M. Bridges, who served as District Court Judge for the past 12 years.
The courtroom was filled with other judges, local lawyers, numerous local government officials, family and well wishers of the South Stanly High graduate and current resident of Stanfield.
In a formal, dignified service of administering the oath of office, Pastor Bob Gruver of Albemarle’s First Assembly of God opened with a stirring invocation, asking for “God’s great wisdom in these tenuous times” for the new judge. The Bridges children — Ariel, Justine and Ethan — followed by leading the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance.
This was followed by the singing of the National Anthem by The Rev. Johnnie McCullers and James Senter, president of the Stanly County Bar Association, recognizing the dignitaries in attendance.
In his presentation of Bridges to the court, E.H. Morton Jr. characterized Bridges as “a true professional, who encompasses the ideals, traditions and tenants of the law.”
Following his presentation and with his wife, Vivian, holding the Bible, Bridges was administered the oath of office by former Superior Court Judge Michael E. Beale, who retired as Superior Court Judge on Dec. 31, 2008.
In his comments, Bridges thanked his supporters from Stanly, Anson and Richmond counties and his family, then asked for a moment of silence for the late Tim White, the Albemarle City Councilman who died in October 2008.
In closing, Bridges quoted from Frederick Douglass, 19th century abolitionist and statesman who received votes for president of the United States at the 1888 Republican National Con-vention, and expressed his desire to be a role model for today’s youth
“It doesn’t matter if you’re black, white, red, yellow or brown, you can succeed if you work hard,” Bridges said.
