The Norwood Board of Commissioners spent the evening appointing citizens to varying positions at their regular meeting Monday night.
The first order of business was to appoint a new commissioner to take Beverly Johnson's former seat. Commissioner Robert Allen made a motion to nominate Larry McMahon as the next Commissioner of Norwood. Without any further discussion, the board appointed McMahon as the new commissioner.
McMahon has served the Town of Norwood in the past, as well as currently acting as the president of the Norwood Museum. From 2005 to 2009, McMahon served as the Mayor of Norwood. Also, McMahon previously served as a commissioner for ten years, from 1993 to 2005, with a couple years off in-between.
“I'd like to thank the board for the confidence they've placed in me to sit with them again,” said McMahon.
He will serve as a commissioner for a year, until the next round of elections.
Commissioner James Lilly was appointed to the position of Mayor Pro-tem of Norwood. Lilly, who has been a board member for eight years, has served as mayor pro-tem before.
“It's an honor to serve,” said Lilly. “I'm here to serve the board and the Town of Norwood and their wishes. The citizens of Norwood are great; they feel like family to me.”
Linda Clontz was appointed to the Planning and Zoning board, where she will serve until 2015. Also, Raymond Skidmore was re-appointed to the ABC board.
In other Norwood news, the sale of the property on 718 North Main Street will now be conducted through a private transaction. Previously, the board had voted to sale the property in a public auction, but after consulting with their attorney, they've decided to sale through private negotiations, utilizing said attorney for the proceedings.
The board also discussed the issue of the E-1 sewage pumps. The board is currently under talks to have the residents of Norwood tie into this system. If this transpires, the board is discussing running a special tap-on fee for those who decide to tap on early. However, nothing has been set in stone, as of yet.
“I would suggest we spend more time on this preliminary report before we make any decisions,” advised Town Administrator Dwight Smith.
“Our biggest problem is training people to put proper materials down the drain,” said Commissioner Allen.
A motion passed to defer the discussion of the E-1 pumps to a later date, after the board of commissioners has had a chance to have a workshop with an engineer.
Lastly, the Town of Norwood will host their Christmas Parade on November 28 at 5 p.m. With a tree lighting ceremony to follow.
The next regular board meeting will be on December 3 at 7 p.m.
