Stanly residents get ‘locked up’ to raise funds for MDA

Monday, February 20, 2012 — Members of the Albemarle business community came together on Feb. 9 to be “locked up” at Albemarle Fire Station No. 1.

Accused of having a big heart, these volunteers were arrested and brought to a mock jail where they raised more than $40,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

The local Albemarle community came together with the common goal of sending as many local kids to camp this summer. Costing $800 per child, citizens of Albemarle were able to send more than 40 kids to camp this summer. The top “Jailbird” for the day was Tommy Jordan from Twisted Networx, raising $7,196 and counting.

Funds raised enable MDA to continue providing direct services to local children and adults with neuromuscular diseases.

In addition to a worldwide research program, MDA provides assistance with the purchase of wheelchairs and leg braces, and offers a Summer Camp program for children ages 6-17 with muscular dystrophy.

Free medical services are also available at the MDA ALS/Neuromuscular Clinic at Carolinas Medical Center for individuals diagnosed with any of the 43 diseases covered by MDA.

For information on this or any other MDA events call (704) 663-1181.
