Board of Education welcomes new members, elects officers

Monday, December 10, 2012 — Tuesday’s Stanly County Schools board meeting introduced some new faces while some familiar ones were elevated to higher positions.

Dr. Angela Mills, the newly-elected representative of District 3, was joined by District 1 representative Lonnie Chandler, District 2 representative Mitzie Almond and Tracy Lowder, who represents District 4, as the newest members of the board.

In addition to the introduction of the new members, Melvin Poole, who serves District 6, was voted as the board’s new chairman. Jeff Chance, one of the two at-large members, is the new vice chairman.

Poole replaces previous chairperson Anita Owens-Scott while Chance replaces previous vice chairperson Sandee Lambert. Scott and Lambert are no longer on the board after serving out their terms.

Mills, who had been retired from the school system the past four years, returned after beating Tim Smith in the November election. She replaces Chris G. Whitley, who was not up for re-election.

Chandler joins the board after beating Krista Bowers in the closest of the school board races. He fills the seat Lambert once held.

Almond won her seat after beating out Ron Crawley and John Boing. She replaces Tracey Wyrick, who failed in his bid to earn a county commissioner seat.

Lowder earned her spot on the board after beating Mike Martin in the November election. She replaces Owens-Scott.

Mike Barbee, who serves District 5, was the only incumbent seeking re-election that retained his post. He defeated Jimmy Schneider.
