Richfield teachers have fun serving burgers to raise funds

Friday, November 23, 2012 — The teachers and students at Richfield Elementary School have gotten their fill of McDonalds and magic this week.

Recently, from 6-8 p.m. one evening, more than 20 teachers gathered for a McTeacher night at the McDonald’s in Richfield.

Principal Shelby Lawson said that their fundraising efforts, in which they will gather a percentage of sales during the two hours of the fundraiser, attracted guests to the point that the dining room reached and maintained capacity.

Lawson, along with other teachers, joined the McDonald’s employees in serving customers, rotating every 30 minutes. They greeted, took orders and handled the cash registers.

Melissa Burris, a kindergarten teacher, worked at the drive-thru window during her shift. While she said the work was relatively easy, she noted that the job demands a fast-paced work environment.

“I’d like to thank the employees. They were very helpful in teaching us what we had to do,” she said.

Fourth-grade teacher Jessica Collins spent time in the drive-thru collecting the money after their orders were placed.

“I have worked retail and restaurants. This was the most stressful,” Collins said comparing her previous experiences.

Collins took pride in the fact that she was also able to sell a gift card which discounts to local retail stores as an extra fundraising item.

Lawson and the other teachers were complimentary of McDonald’s efforts in working with the school.

Their McTeacher night collected a full dining room of customers, many of which were greeted with a special song by Lawson, similar to the effect of the McDonald’s theme song.

“Ba Da Ba Da Da, I'm lovin’ it!” she sang.

Likely still charged off their dinner from the night before, kindergarten and first grade students were treated to a magic show last Wednesday afternoon.

The show was presented by Charles Misenheimer, Magic by Chaz.

“The kids loved the show,” Lawson said.

Richfield Mayor Jim Misenheimer arranged the show for the students.

“They really got a big kick out of it,” Lawson said.
